Remove or Abandon?

Five quick questions, one plain answer. It's the same reasoning we'd walk you through on the phone.

1. Where is the tank?

How we think about it

No prices here, and no hard sell. This is the same reasoning we'd walk you through on the phone.

  • Aboveground tanks get removed. Basement, garage, or outside against the house. Abandonment is for buried tanks.
  • If the buyer, lender, or attorney asked for removal, that's the answer. If removal would be very hard, ask them in writing whether a documented abandonment would be acceptable.
  • Under a driveway, deck, patio, or addition, against the foundation, or where a machine can't reach: abandonment is usually the practical choice.
  • Open ground with a clear path: removal is practical, and NYS DEC says removal is generally preferred where it's practical. Abandonment is still a proper closure if you'd rather not dig up the lawn.
  • A possible leak doesn't change the choice by itself. It gets dealt with either way. We don't do cleanup, so we have no reason to find a problem.

Whatever this page says, we'll confirm on site. Sometimes the tank isn't where anyone thought it was.
